Target Audience

Target Audience Research

I've been doing some secondary research on what genre of music the target audience, 30-49 year old ( in the U.S.), listens to.Tje majority of the demographics for the 30-49, show a major interest in; Rock, rap and pop music.
(https://www.statista.com/statistics/253915/favorite-music-genres-in-the-us )

Using this information I have chosen the song; 'Wake up' by 'EDEN' who is a mixture of rock and pop music (indie pop, alternative rock,dream pop, electronic music, indietronica ) which fits in perfectly with the mainstream genres which the intended audience listens to. Contemporary artists that fit into the rock/ pop genre of music include artists and bands such as; Coldplay, Adele, Taylor Swift. EDEN main target audience is currently unspecified according to google. However, deducing from the fact that he has a 'quirky' voice, which is a convention that targets the  '35-49' audience

Target Audience profile;

Age: 30-49 year old, the ones I will be targeting will be younger 30-35 year old since they are much more familiar with EDEN, as they were a part of mainstream music and easily recognise the artists because of his 'dark' indie pop songs talking about contemporary issues such as 'Drugs' and 'Sex'

Gender: they are targeting both genders; female and male with no sexual orientation specified, meaning that they could be aiming at all audiences. Therefore, it will be easier to follow them in their footsteps and try to aim for more mainstream rather than a niche audience.

Demographics: The specific type of primary audience in the would be anyone who is going through problems, struggles, reformers,  which will fit in with E-D class. These people are going through consistent hardships and EDEN release songs about contemporary problems ( Sex, Drugs, Love issues). at the same time, one potential secondary audience would be C2-C1 class since they are most likely to be going through problems which are discussed in EDEN's, for instance, 'Wake Up' is a song about wanting to make a change in life, regretting and reflecting on the past, this could be even aimed at settled elders with sedentary lifestyles. The type of audience EDEN, and the audience I will be aiming at from the family life cycle would be; 'Dependent' and 'Bachelor' as they are people who are most likely to face some sort of challenge/s, which is why the songs of the artists are made. The generation that its targeting at is the Millennial or Gen Ys because these are the generations that are in between 25-40 years old, and have grown up with EDEN, who have been around for 10-11 years ( started in 2008)

Iconography / Theories.

The genre of the music videos will be a hybrid of pop and rock and therefore the iconography must reflect these genres and the main theme of talking about contemporary issues and daily struggles. Using Blumer and Katz' uses and Gratification theory, EDEN has created their music for the main purpose to escape. This can be seen through songs such as 'Wake up', 'Rock 'n' Roll' Discussing how hes been in relationships for so long that he has forgotten how they even started and how he motivates people to not suicide as he says living is brave, 'i ain't scared of living'

The music video reinforces they lyrics, this is seen in the 'Demons' music video where they are zooming the camera into different viewers and showing some personal contemporary issues, which reinforce the lyrics. For instance, the first viewer is a girl who is seems to have lost her parents, this is very easily reinforced by the actress crying at a coffin, holding their loved ones picture and therefore making it believable. Therefore, i will make my video narrative to relate to the music video whilst still following the music video conventions. At the same time, there will be scenes that reinforce and relate to the codes and conventions of that music genre and the lyrics. The messages that will be mainly reinforced are the ones talking about 'bleeding out for you' as the song title itself is 'Bleeding out' by EDEN. Lyrics such as ''I close my eyes, and take it in, I'm bleeding out'' are going to be heavily reinforced by the narrative. If the camera angles, close-ups on facial expressions etc... are done accordingly, used appropriately and fit in with the lyrics then chances are that the audience will receive the intended messages rather than the op-positional messages.
